Forklift Seat Belts - This guideline reason is to describe the Regulation requirements for the utilization of driver seatbelts or restraints on forklifts. It is the employers' accountability to ensure that every machine, piece of equipment and device inside the workplace is chosen and used rightly and operated according to the manufacturer's instructions.

In regards to their maintenance, inspection, fabrication, use and design Rough Terrain forklifts need to meet the guidelines of ANSI Standard ASME B56.6-1992.

Side boom tractors and mobile machine with a Rollover Protective Structure, or ROPS for short, should contain seat belts which satisfy the requirements of the Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE, Standard J386 JUN93, Operator Restraint System for Off-Road Work Machines. If whatever mobile machinery includes seat belts required by law, the operator and subsequent passengers need to ensure they utilize the belts each time the vehicle is in motion or engaged in operation since this could cause the machinery to become unstable and thus, not safe.

If a seat belt or other operator restraint is required on a forklift.

The seat belt requirements while operating a forklift depend on different factors. Whether the lift truck is outfitted with a Rollover Protective Structure, the kind of lift truck itself and the year the forklift was manufactured all contribute to this determination. The manufacturer's directions and the requirements of the applicable standard are referenced in the Regulation.

With regards to powered industrial forklifts, ANSI Standard ASME B56.1-1993 refers to an operator restraint device, enclosure or system. An operator restraint device, system, or enclosure is intended in order to assist the driver in reducing the possibility of entrapment of the torso and/or head between the truck and the ground in the event of a tip over. The restraint device or system may comprise a seat belt, although a seat belt is not necessarily a part of such equipment or system.
